Food Systems
What is a circular food system?
Industrial farming has turned agriculture into a leading source of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, and is driving the extinction of species. In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the conflict in Ukraine have caused major disruptions to the global food system and impacted food supply and prices. Globally, 150 million urban residents are food insecure. (IHC Global)
Changing our food system to one based on the circular economy is one of the most powerful things we can do to tackle climate change and build biodiversity (Ellen MacArthur Foundation). Cities have the opportunity to leverage circular principles to increase the resilience of their food system to ensure their residents have access to healthy and nutritious food.
