Children are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly heatwaves, which can lead to health issues like respiratory problems, asthma, and learning difficulties. These health risks, combined with the disruption caused by climate-related events such as floods and heatwaves, have significant consequences for education systems. Frequent school closures due to extreme weather events disrupt children’s learning, exacerbate existing inequalities, and deprive them of safe, supportive learning environments.
Through the OASIS program, schoolyards become hubs of innovation, using nature-based solutions to tackle climate challenges while promoting physical and mental well-being. This guide helps educators weave climate literacy into everyday lessons, engages communities in co-design, and builds lasting ownership. The OASIS approach combines hands-on learning with urban sustainability, creating a model for resilient, green school environments that benefit everyone.
Our latest publications building on practical experiences from the OASIS Schoolyards program serve as a guide for turning schoolyards into climate-resilient, vibrant spaces that inspire learning, play, and community action. Designed for teachers and city officials, these guides show how to transform outdoor areas into adaptive environments that boost social interaction and environmental awareness.
Schools play a vital role in shaping children’s understanding of their environment, and education systems must be better prepared to help students adapt to the challenges posed by a changing climate. By incorporating climate education, we can empower the next generation to build more resilient communities and take proactive steps toward mitigating future climate risks. Addressing these issues now will ensure that children are not only protected from the effects of climate change but also equipped to lead in creating a sustainable future.
About OASIS Schoolyards
Originating in Paris and now adopted by Quezon City, Semarang and beyond the OASIS (Openness, Adaptation, Sensitisation, Innovation and Social Ties) initiative, reimagines schoolyards as ‘urban oases.’ These spaces not only combat flooding and mitigate urban heat but also serve as vibrant, green sanctuaries that promote environmental awareness and community engagement.
Launched in 2018 as a flagship initiative of the Paris Resilience Strategy, the OASIS Schoolyards program transforms schoolyards into innovative, non-formal learning spaces that utilize nature-based solutions to enhance climate resilience. This program promotes community awareness and sustainable environmental practices through actionable solutions, collaboratively designed by students, teachers, and other community stakeholders. It serves as a model for integrating experiential learning with urban sustainability efforts.
