Now more than ever, cities must think about their health in a holistic way; this means keeping residents physically and mentally healthy while supplying access to healthcare, a health-supportive environment, and other resources necessary for a high quality of life.

The COVID-19 crisis has laid bare how the key determinants of a healthy city are deeply interconnected. These factors range widely from sanitation and hygiene measures to city financing to life expectancy. When cities are facing budget deficits, for example, how can they invest in the new cleaning protocols necessary to minimize viral exposure? Or if cities have populations of residents with major health risks that may make them more vulnerable to the virus, how can they ensure their people stay safe?
