Play and Resilience: new report on how cities are strengthening their resilience through play

Share

With most children now growing up in cities, we need playful spaces that nurture a generation of happy, creative and resilient children and help make our cities more resilient to the shocks they face.

The initiative Strengthening Urban Resilience through Play launched by the Real Play Coalition, the Resilient Cities Network and ambassador cities, Houston, Milan, Belfast, Barcelona, Colima, Ramallah and Tbilisi, aims to promote the value of play in cities globally, and support impactful play-focused ideas that contribute to children’s well-being, optimal development, and resilience strengthening.

This latest report created in partnership with Arup and the LEGO Foundation, presents the insights from a series of peer-to-peer learning activities between the partners and member cities, public events (online webinars and dedicated events during COP26 in Glasgow) and an extensive public survey that was carried out between June-September 2021.

The report is structured around three priority themes:

  • Co-creation and Inclusion
  • Urban Planning and Quality of Play
  • Finance and Funding of Play

Included within these themes are case studies, insights from the survey and recommendations on how to further scale up and build urban resilience through actions that promote play.

The objective of the report is to inform, inspire and mobilize other city leaders, urban practitioners, play workers and the broader resilience community on the importance of play for urban resilience. Through practical examples from across the globe, we want to highlight how investing in play can create multiple benefits not only for the children and their caregivers but for the city as a whole.
