Semarang’s Resilience Journey

As a coastal city in an Indonesian archipelago, Semarang’s most pressing concerns are about water. The city experiences both tidal flooding and flash floods. In recent years, the impact from floods has multiplied due to sea level rise, coastal erosion, and land subsidence.

The city has implemented innovative programs for rainwater harvesting, planted vetiver grass to prevent landslides, rehabilitated mangroves to protect coastlines, and invested in early warning systems for floods and vector-borne diseases, but there is still work to do.
